Gallipoli Peninsula is a sort of pilgrimage place especially for the  Australians, the New Zealanders and the Turks.It is accepted as the birth place of Australian and New Zealand  nationhood.Many British,Australian ,New Zealander and Turkish visitors visit this moving place.

The first World War broke out ,and the Allies forced their way to get through the Dardanelles to help Russia with the strongest navy of its time. They were stopped on 18 March 1915 by the Turks.Later British troops, French troops,the Australian and New Zealander Army Corps(ANZACS)  landed on Gallipoli Peninsula .Many men were lost from both sides during the Gallipoli  Campaign which lasted about 8 months. MUSTAFA KEMAL ,who was a senior commander at the beginning of the campaign and  later shouldered all the responsibility ,  defended  the peninsula .

‘WAR IS A CRIME UNLES THE LIFE OF A NATION IS IN DANGER ’  This is what  Kemal always believed. He was against war  but the life of his nation was in danger and he ordered  his soldiers to die for their country .Thousands of them died .

‘THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES THAT OTHER MAY LIVE IN PEACE’ reads  one of the Anzac ‘s epitaph.What a fitting epitaph to the Turkish soldiers.Hadn’t they already become friends even during the war? Hadn’t they thrown tobaco,bully beef cans,rasınes  etc..to each other from one trench to another?
